Albert Dedicates His Life to Healing Others

In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson helps us appreciate the dedication of Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965).

The book introduces us to a young man named Albert, who looked at his life and decided that he had been given many advantages others did not have. He decided he would do his best to share his gifts with others. Albert studied hard in medical school and became a doctor. Then he moved to Africa and spent his life making sure the people there had better medical care.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Schweitzer's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Not everyone can become a doctor and go to Africa like Albert Schweitzer, but there will always be work dedicated people can do. That is one thing Albert taught the world. It's something you might want to think about." (p. 62)

I bought many of the books in this series at a book sale. My grandaughter just loved them and has reread them many times. I think they are marvelous and a wonderful way to offer biography, history and values in an interesting format!

The everybody sin

I have never heard of or read Bob Sorge until now, but this book is well written and simple to understand. It was loaned to me by a friend and I was immediately taken by its straight forward attack of an insidious enemy.

Sorge's precepts are supported by biblical reference, the use of which is plentiful. I see something in Sorge's writing that I like very much. When scripture is brought into the chapter, he often brings clarity to its relevance through explanation and description, i.e., I am not expected to be a theologian to understand how the author wants to apply the information. There are several illustrations from his own life and he is transparent enough to allow for believability.

It seems to me that the book has broad application in humanity as each of us deals with envy. It deals with the Church in this, there are numerous references to the envy taking place between churchmen in each city or region. Whereas many areas are seeing "community building" taking place in their town others are still working to outdo their fellow pastor. Great strength comes to the church through unity of purpose under Christ!

Sorge makes a beautiful summary of what we'd be like minus envy when he says, "When we are rooted, grounded and perfected in love, our sense of identity in God is so profoundly fulfilled that nothing we see with the natural eye can produce an envious response within us. We wish for nothing that anyone else has because we already have everything there is to have- an extravagant, intimate relationship with the Lord of the universe" (pg 132,133).

Inspired by hands-on printing techniques and the things she collects, such as children's books and collectible toys, VIRGINIE MORGAND uses hand drawn shapes and bright colours to create vibrant images full of life and energy. Based in Paris, Virginie's background is in animation but, having learnt how to screen print at L'atelier Dupont, she has developed her own visual language as an illustrator working to brief for a growing number of clients. A Brilliant Occupations Book

This book is absolutely brilliant! First of all, I love how large it is and how eye-catching the cover is. Its a great prelude to the fun inside. The book is set-up in that it introduces a scene/setting (anywhere from a hospital to gym) with a large spread illustration bursting with details. Then the next page shows pictures of the people that can typically be found in that setting and what they do there. Thus the pattern continues through 14 locations. It’s one your kids can spend quite a bit of time searching through and I feel that it is highly informative as well. I’m in love with the illustrations, they are all so colorfully artistic and unique. It’s one that we will re-visit again and again. As I said, it’s brilliant!

This excellent book is intended for young children, with retro illustrations, and simple descriptions, of the many jobs available in a number of industries. It focuses on jobs at the hospital, newsroom, university, construction site, the great outdoors, and many more. It’s easy to read for my older children, and I also like to read aloud to my young children. I’ve seen that this well made book has gotten my kids thinking about their future and we’ve had some good conversations about jobs and growing up after reading it.

This is a perfect book for parents, teachers and for Summer Reading programs!
The illustrations throughout the book are somewhat expressionist but are colorful and simple. These are all done by the author/artist of the book.
The story contents describes various types of employment. The main focus is on fourteen different categories and the employees within them, plus, a brief description of his/her duties. The 63 pages of illustrated information ends with an extensive Index for easy reference.
The cover and title depicts the book contents very well. The hardbound workmanship of the book is of a high quality.
I would recommend this for ages four to eight.
