Theoretically, this book develops new insights by bringing together human geography, biogeography and archaeology to provide a long term perspective on human-wheat relations. Although the relational, more-than-human turn in the social sciences has seen a number of plant-related studies, these have not yet fully engaged with the question of what it means to be a plant. The book draws on diverse literatures to tackle this question, advancing thinking about how plants act in their worlds, and how we can better understand our shared worlds. Empirically, the book reports original ethnographic research on wheat production, processing and consumption in a context of globalisation, drought and climate change and traces the complex networks of wheat using a methodology of 'following' it and its people. The ethnobotanical study captures a number of moments in the life of Australian wheat; on the farm, at the supermarket, in the lives of coeliac sufferers, in laboratories and in industrial factories. This study demands new ways of thinking about wheat geographies, going beyond the rural landscape to urban and industrial frontiers, and being simultaneously local and global in perspective and connection.

The definitive book on a remarkable plant

This book is a beautifully written exploration of the multiple lives of wheat. Wheat is just everywhere in our lives, in some obvious ways but also in more subtle and insidious ways. The authors link plant genomes to global production chains, farmers struggling with climate change to coeliacs struggling with gluten. At the heart of it all is a very versatile and pervasive plant. The book gripped me from the very first page (indeed, it's possibly the best first page of an academic research monograph I've ever read). Will appeal to botanists, environmental scientists, agricultural political economists, cultural studies and geography academics, as well as a broader non-fiction readership among those fascinated by the history and politics of plants. Highly recommended.

Risk management, which assumes that future risks can be understood, measured and to some extent predicted, is the focus of this solid, thoroughgoing history. Probability theory, pioneered by 17th-century French mathematicians Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat, has made possible the design of great bridges, electric power utilities and insurance policies. The statistical sampling methods invented by dour Swiss scientist Jacob Bernoulli undergird diverse activities such as the testing of new drugs, stock-picking and wine tasting. For several centuries, mathematics has been the language of the exact sciences. Only in the 20th century has mathematics become predominant in other fields, particularly economics and finance. In this book, Bernstein (Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street, LJ 12/91), head of an economic consulting firm, traces the development of probability theory from its beginnings in analyzing games of chance, through its application to statistical theory and insurance, up to its present use in developing investment strategies to control risk. He includes excellent sections on portfolio analysis and on investments in derivatives. Best Book I've Ever Read

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I work in insurance and have studied math most of my adult life so I am biased but tracing the intellectual history of what I do today was worth every minute I spent reading this book.

I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys math, finance, insurance, or history.

There are only a few books on risk that can be said to be instrumental in determining how the field has evolved. This book is required reading for any risk scholar and one of the cornerstones in our knowledge on risk and risk management practices.

Odds Are, You'll Like It

The origins, historical progression, and modern concept of risk is

presented in "Against the Gods." From the abacus to rolling dice,

annuities, insurance industry origins, explorations, gambling,

military tactics, scientific research, to investing, and more. In

most things in life big and small, there is some element of risk is

involved. This book presents Risk, and how our civilization has

utilized it - and needed it - to evolve to where it is today.

Individuals and groups don't take a risk with the expectation that it

will fail (although there's awareness that failure is a possibility).

The *expectation* is not of failure.

Peter Bernstein made this topic fun and informative for those of us

that are 'non-numerically oriented.' Actually, the concept of risk

involves a lot of non-mathematical and statistical concepts.

The writing style and chapter titles are hip: "The Winds of the

Greeks and the Roll of the Dice, The Renaissance Gambler, The Measure

of Our Ignorance, The Man Who Counted Everything Except Calories, The

Failure of Invariance," and "Awaiting the Wildness," for example.

The modern and Western concept of risk began with the Hindu-Arabic

numbering system that arrived in the West about 700 years ago. The

more in-depth examination of risk truly began during the Renaissance,

resulting in exploration an the exploitation of resources.

In Chapter 10, "Pea pods and Perils," Bernstein emphasizes the

rock-solid concept of "Regression to the Mean" (RoM). This is true

especially concerning the historical trends and patterns of the

financial markets. Yet, he notes how difficult the Predictable

Regression of the Mean is for humans to plan with RoM, and around it.

There are three reasons why humans have trouble using the RoM in

decision-making: 1) It proceeds so slow that a 'shock' will disrupt

the process, 2) When the RoM is reached, as it is periodically

people don't recognize it and hover on either side of the mean, and

3) The old mean may be unsustainable, meaning the old Mean is being

replaced by a new Mean. But....there still is....a Mean.

Bernstein states on page 173:

"If you bet that today's normality will extend indefinitely into the

future, you will get rich sooner and face a smaller risk of going

broke than if you run with the crowd."

This strategy seems oriented for the long-term growth oriented crowd.

We witnessed the sheep and lemmings in the late 1990s that

jumped onto the Tech Bubble Wagon, only to get burned badly by not

getting off in time. (Or perhaps, the sheep got out in time, but the

lemmings didn't.) Some similarities In 2007 with the Real Estate SFH

housing and condo speculation, flipping, and sub-prime mortgage and

ARM market, currently.

A certain percentage of the human population are basically, lemmings.

Bernstein spent some time on Jacob Bernoulli. Bernoulli's notion of

"satisfaction resulting from any small increase in wealth will be

inversely proportionate to the quantity of good previously

possessed." And perhaps this is why King Midus was an unhappy man.

What are the consequences of excluding, avoiding, or making risk

illegal? In modern times, when the Soviets tried to administer

uncertainty out of existence through the government fiat and

planning, they choked off social and economic progress. Communism is

contrary to human nature. But much of it was that communism took

away the concept of risk.

Risky Businesses, or business involving risk: the insurance industry

actually goes back to the Code of Hammurabi in 1800 BC. Called

"Bottomry," the owner of the ship would take out a loan to finance a

ship's voyage. No premiums were every paid but if the ship was lost,

the loan didn't have to be repaid.

The concept of life insurance basically began in Greece and Rome. In

the Middle Ages, the growth in trade spurred the insurance and

finance industries in Western Europe.

you play to win rather than avoid losing. True in everyday business.

There are benefits to cooperation, that produces two winners or

semi-winners rather than on loser and one winner.

Beautiful Book

I gave this as a gift. My friend was very pleased and said she had never seen many of the beautiful pieces in the book which, is impressive as she did her thesis on Memento Mori and Victorian Mourning Jewelry. Very pleased.

Badly Designed and Cheaply Printed

This book is just awful. I was hoping it might have items from the Wellcome Collection, but instead this book is filled up with badly recycled images that anyone can find on the Internet - it kind of insults my intelligence, as if pretending no one has ever really seen these images before.

There is absolutely nothing new here. Many of the images in the book you will recognize as having been upcycled-to-Death on Etsy for years now. What on earth were the editors thinking???? I have purchased books by the Wellcome Collection in the past that were actually about the Wellcome Collection but this - this is just a bad regurgitation of work everyone has already seen before mixed in with horrible digital artwork and images we have already seen a bazillion times before i.e. Mexican Death Art. The portraits with the skulls in place of faces is so incredibly cheesy - why this was even considered in the book is beyond comprehension.

Unfortunately they also went the cheap route when having the book designed, imaged and published because the book feels cheaply made and looks cheaply made.

I will not be giving up precious bookshelf space for this book.

Dragons Are Our Friends!

Okay, so I started with this second novel and am now reading the first one.

Full disclosure: I've done proof reading for this author and a little on this novel, as well. The difficult aspect of proofing a novel, or any work, is that it takes away from a smooth flow while trying to read the novel. If you get all that, then please do continue!

My first impression is "Harry Potter, Look Out! You've got company coming!"

Cooper writes very differently for the Dragon series from his regular thriller series starring Cal and Daniel, and their band of retired military colleagues, who are working to keep this nation safe. Would that we really had such a group; we'd all be able to breathe more freely.

Back to Benjamin Dragon: This is a story of a young boy, 10 or 11 years old, who discovers that he has some talents that other kids don't have. This is a good news-bad news situation, and I'd be blowing it big time if I gave you any more than that; spoiler alert indeed.

From the beginning of this novel to the end - and there must be more coming - the characters are developing into a solid group of friends, who can help each other through some possibly dark times.

Give yourselves a break from the shoot-em-up military thrillers and enjoy what Monty Python called "... Something Completely Different!" You will be glad you did and, like me, I suspect you will be waiting for more.

The characters are quite believable and the continuing growth and maturation of Benjamin, as he assumes his place in the world,

Once again, Carlos Cooper has taken a break from the hard charging exploits of the Cal, Daniel, and the rest of the Corps Justice warriors to release his "inner 10-year-old boy". This book is a continuation of The Chronicles of Benjamin Dragon, the first book being The Awakening. The characters are quite believable and the continuing growth and maturation of Benjamin, as he assumes his place in the world, is fascinating. Although it is intended for the YA audience, I am sure it will be a hit with older readers as well. I believe the mark of a good author is how much he makes you care about the characters in his stories, as they face the consequences of their actions. This story will fire your imagination and make you remember those days when you "knew" anything was possible. In the interest of candor and full disclosure, I was a Beta reader for this book, but my review was in no way influenced by that fact. I love this book so much, I am buying copies for each of my grandchildren and I will use it in my English classes for adult GED students.

Mr. C.G.Cooper tells an exceptional story in Benjamin Dragon II. This novel offers engaging characters, and some of the author's most profound writing. I love the book. It has been a pleasure to observe Benjamin mature from the beginning of the series as he learns about his"gifts" and copes with finding his legacy in the scheme of the world. I am looking forward to Dragon III.
I did some editing for the series and am so impressed, I'm using it with my middle school classes. Trust me, the students are loving it. It is not only very entertaining, it is perfect for teaching literary skills. More importantly, the series inspires youths, as well as adults, to become stronger, accepting, and better people. I give the Benjamin Dragon Series my highest reccommendation.

Good for any air brushing application reference .

I was very impressed. Simply put: get what you pay for. It might be high end price wise and in my opinion well worth the price. The author presents all of the material well; very easy to understand and apply. This book would be good for anyone learning air brushing for any application.
